The statue of the "Farnese Hercules" and some ancient ruins surround a paved path that evokes the Via Appia. At the foot of the remains, a man raises a tombstone and discovers the entrance to a cave that watching two women dressed in antique. The composition leaves room to cloudy sky on which a large tree silhouette cut-out.

En 1790, Pierre-Antoine dramaturge Caron de Beaumarchais maîtrise le décor composé de huit panneaux d'Hubert Robert pour le grand salon de son hôtel particulier à Paris. En 1802, les Travaux d'Urbanisme condamnent l'hôtel particulier. La maison est rachetée par la Ville de Paris en 1818 et sa destruction est achevée entre 1826 et 1829. Les panneaux du décor sont d'abord réutilisés dans l'Ancien Hôtel de Ville car les appartements du préfet de Seine sont ensuite entreposés dans les greniers. En 1852, une nouvelle exposition est réalisée dans la galerie du Marbre. Les panneaux sont sauvés de l'incendie qui a ravagé l'Hôtel de Ville en 1871 et font l'objet de restaurations plusieurs années. Ils retournent ensuite dans le nouvel hôtel de ville mais ne sont plus accrochés ensemble. Ainsi en 1902, les enseignes « Médicis Vénus » et « Farnèse Hercule » entrent au musée du Petit Palais tandis que les six autres sont toujours conservées à l'Hôtel de Ville.
