The honor to be among the most important flower painters in Vienna, Johann Knapp gained for his virtuoso technical skills because of tasteful arrangements, but especially because of its scientific meticulousness in the representation of plants. He justified his appointment as "natural history painter" by drawing plants in k.k. Dutch Garden at Schönbrunn. He also created numerous watercolors of sponges, exotic plants, fruits and grapes Austrian Archduke Anton Viktor. His brother, Archduke Johann in turn asked him to representation of a "Flora alpina", a three hundred sheets comprehensive collection of plants from the Austrian Alps (Austrian National Library and MAK, both Vienna). But notoriety gained Johann Knapp by the painting "Homage to Jacquin (Jacquin monument)," on which he worked for several months from 1821 to 1822 (Vienna, Belvedere). It is a large-scale still life with a exuberant floral bouquet along with fruits and vegetables (1727-1817) to honor the eminent botanist Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin should. The painter was therefore a universal talent, because both the drawing and watercolor, as well as painting in oil were familiar to him, the small paper format as well as the big screen. His in-depth monitoring of vegetation can be seen on the watercolor studies for the tribute still lives, which are now in the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg. One way or another plant returns in the present flower piece, such as the Blue Water Lily (Nymphaea coerulea), which can be seen here in the center of the large bouquet in-blown form and as a bud. Just the color, but also the big bizarre bloom attracts first attention. The colorful accent but deliver the two strains of the Red Sage. these plants from the iris, the marigold, the sorrel and the delicate Twistedstalk be accompanied. Also interesting is the vase which has the shape of an amphora and is decorated with playing music in Putti relief shape of this bouquet. Before that, one sees another vessel with flowers, a simple glass bowl in which a Centifolia, a hollyhock, a tulip and many other flowers are. Various fruits and two goldfinches complete the ensemble. In his appearance, this arrangement is a typical product of the decorative still life painting, as it has emerged in the imperial city from about 1800's. Compared to the magnificent bouquets but the presentation takes up this image of simple, although it has been sought in chromatic and formal area for a balanced appearance. But perhaps evokes the meticulous precision with which the plants are shown, the impression that it was about to see an learning object, and not a painting that alone should satisfy the curiosity. Incidentally, it is unlikely that Knapp has also painted the background, because of any of the surviving records indicate that he also dealt with the landscape painting. Rather, it seems to have been a collaboration with a colleague here, which was not uncommon at the time. The view shows the Scharfenecktunnel in Helenental near the town of Baden near Vienna. This area, as can be seen was almost deforested in the early 19th century. Today it is a forest with black pine is spreading, more specifically with the Pinus nigra austriaca, a Mediterranean species, the northernmost of Baden finds its spread in the area.
