This "Pierrot standing in a landscape" is a copy of the center of a decorative panel part of the decoration painted by Nicolas Lancret for Boullongne hotel, built by Jules Hardouin-Mansard on the Place Louis-le-Grand (now 23 Place Vendome, at the corner of the rue de la Paix). Jean de Boullonges, steward of the King's orders, had given to the artist in 1728 running a decorative set of five panels and four top-to-door. Lancret are represented subjects of pastoral, gallant festivals or commedia dell'arte, then very fashionable. remained in situ until 1896, the decor was deposed and sold in its entirety in Paris, at the Galerie Georges Petit (May 27, 1896, No. 7 and 8, Fig.). The "Pierrot saluting" panel depicting a landscape framed by arabesques, whose central motif is repeated in this painting is not localized but is known by photography (see Wildenstein, Georges, "Lancret," Paris 1924 fig. 182 and 186) .Marianne Roland Michel ( "Representations of exoticism in painting in France in the first half of the eighteenth century", "Studies on Voltaire and the eighteenth century ', Oxford, CLI-CLV 1976 , p.1446 and note 29) indicates that a second version of this decoration was executed by the artist, conceived as tables, without the entourage arabesques, figures silhouetted against a landscape background (not localized, collection of the Princess of Poix). It does not specify whether all the signs were taken and whether there was a version of "firm" of "Pierrot", the table Cognac-Jay could be the copy. For his "Pierrot saluting" copied this painting, Lancret was inspired by Watteau figures, including the famous "Pierrot" says "Gilles" from the Louvre Museum. But its direct model was the "Pierrot standing", drawing in three colors of Watteau (about 1717 Haarlem, Teylers Museum) etched into consideration by François Boucher for "Figures of different characters" (No. 17) .Ca belonged table to the collection of Ernest Cognacq but did not appear in the gift to the City of Paris in 1928.
