J. Ottis Adams est né à Amity, Indiana et s'est installé avec sa famille à Shelbyville, Indiana. Le jeune Adams était fasciné par l'art et passait une grande partie de son temps à dessiner. Il s'inscrit au Wabash College mais le quitte un an plus tard pour étudier l'art à la South Kensington School de Londres où il subit l'influence de John Constable et de Joseph Mallord William Turner, dont les paysages intéressent particulièrement Adams. Il retourne dans l'Indiana et s'installe à Muncie. En 1880, Adams se rend à Munich pour étudier à la Royal Academy avec ses collègues artistes de l'Indiana, Theodore Clement Steele et Samuel Richards. Adams a étudié le dessin et la peinture à l'Académie puis a créé son propre studio à Munich. À son retour dans l'Indiana en 1887, Adams ouvre un studio à Muncie et commence à enseigner des cours d'art. En 1889, lui et son collègue artiste William Forsyth ouvrent la Muncie Art School, qui dure deux ans. Adams a participé à une exposition collective d'artistes Hoosier qui ont voyagé d'Indianapolis à Chicago. Un critique a surnommé les artistes de l'exposition The Hoosier Group. Deux ans plus tard, Adams, Forsyth et Steele, ainsi que d'autres artistes de la région, formèrent la Society of Western Artists, la première organisation dédiée à la promotion du travail des artistes de la région. En 1898, Adams et TC Steele achetèrent une maison à Brookville, Indiana, connue plus tard sous le nom d'Hermitage. En 1901, Adams devint l'un des premiers professeurs du nouveau John Herron Art Institute, où il enseigna de 1902 à 1906. Au cours de la dernière partie de sa vie, Adams travailla en Floride et au Michigan ainsi qu'à Brookville.

Late Autumn conveys a misty November morning near the banks of the Whitewater not far from Adams’s Brookville home. The painting was purchased from the Eleventh Annual Exhibition of the Society of Western Artists. The Society held annual exhibitions until 1914 at six Midwestern cities. The John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art, was the Indianapolis venue for the Society’s exhibitions. Many works by Midwestern artists, including Late Autumn were acquired from the museum’s contemporary collection from these exhibitions.
