General description by Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark) website (© Copyright - Statens Museum for Kunst (Galerie nationale du Danemark) - www.smk.dk)

For many years this portrait has been part of the heart of the group of Rembrandt paintings at the National Gallery of Denmark. However, the picture’s authenticity has been challenged over the last decades, meaning that it should now be attributed to one of Rembrandt’s late students, probably Willem Drost.

Inspired by Rembrandt The way the woman is depicted is very much inspired by Rembrandt, a “portrayer of the soul”, as is evident in the model’s calm and gently introvert expression that speaks of quiet contemplation. These features in particular place the picture so close to Rembrandt’s style that we must assume it was done under his supervision while Drost was still a student in his workshop.

The young woman We do not know who the young woman is, but the dress with its square neckline, the blouse, and the elaborate headdress all belong to the early 16th century. Thus, it is difficult to determine whether this is a staged period portrait or a so-called ”tronie”, a kind of anonymous presentation of characters popular in 17th century Holland.

The carnation in the woman’s hand is associated with engagement and marriage symbolism that was widespread in the 16th century, appearing in several female portraits from the time.

Choisissez votre matériau préféré

In the dropdown lists next to the product offering you can select your prefered material and size. The following options are available for individualization:

  • L'impression sur toile: A canvas print, which shall not be confused with a real artwork painted on a canvas, is an image applied onto cotton canvas material. It produces the special look of three-dimensionality. The printed canvas generates a charming, comfortable effect. Canvas Prints have the advantage of being relatively low in weight. That means, it is easy and straightforward to hang the Canvas print without the use of extra wall-mounts. Canvas prints are suited for all types of walls.
  • Tirage aluminium (aluminium dibond): An Aluminium Dibond print is a material with an outstanding depth effect - for a modern impression and a non-reflective surface structure. The colors of the print are luminous and vivid in the highest definition, fine details are very clear.
  • Impression sur verre acrylique: A glossy print on acrylic glass, which is often described as a UV print on plexiglass, will change your favorite original into brilliant home decoration and offers a great alternative option to canvas and aluminidum dibond prints. Your favorite work of art is being printed with the help of modern UV print machines. The major advantage of a plexiglass art print is that contrasts and details will be more exposed with the help of the very fine gradation of the picture.
  • Affiche sur toile: A poster print is a UV printed sheet of canvas with a granular texture on the surface. Please bear in mind, that depending on the size of the poster print we add a white margin between 2-6cm round about the painting, which facilitates the framing with a custom frame.
