Salvator Rosa a développé une sorte de paysage dramatique dans lequel la nature est présentée comme sauvage, dangereuse et remplie d'effets saisissants de lumière, d'arbres brisés, de falaises déchiquetées et de grottes sombres. Originaire de Naples, Rosa s'installe à Rome en 1649, produisant des œuvres dramatiques considérées comme les pendants des paysages calmes et classiques de Claude Lorrain et Nicolas Poussin. Le style sombre de Rosa convient bien au sujet de cette paire de tableaux ; ils racontent un épisode des guerres gréco-perses raconté par l'ancien historien vert Hérodote. Le souverain de l’île de Samos, Polycrate, avait bénéficié d’une chance remarquable. Afin d'éviter un revers de fortune, il jeta un anneau précieux dans la mer, mais il lui fut rendu, avalé par un poisson. Sa bonne fortune prit cependant fin lorsqu'il fut pris au piège par Oroetus de Sardes et mis à mort.
